Women and Children's Health: Pediatrics at Hinsdale

Adventist Hinsdale Hospital proudly unveils a completely renovated 19-bed Pediatric Unit and a five bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. The unit's young patients will take occupancy Monday, Dec. 17, and each is sure to notice the whimsical park theme décor throughout the unit. Being kids, each will surely notice flat screen TVs and PlayStation 2 at every bed!

Plans for the unit began in early 2000. Decisions, large and small, were made by a committee consisting of pediatricians, nursing staff, the hospital construction manager, architects/ interior designer from Anderson/Mikos and hospital administrators. Actual construction started in April of 2001. The pediatric patients were temporarily relocated, and the old unit was gutted completely. (Like all good projects that have happy endings, it took exactly nine months…)

Highlights of the Pediatrics units include:

  • Both areas dedicated exclusively to the care of pediatric patients. Care is provided by committed pediatric nurses who are certified in Pediatric Life Support.
  • Five bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit with capability for centralized advanced physiological monitoring. Registered professional nurses who have been specially trained in pediatric critical care and a Medical Director/Attending Physicians who specialize in pediatric critical care will provide care for these critically ill pediatric patients.
  • All pediatric (19) and pediatric ICU (5) beds will be equipped with state-of-the-art telemetry monitoring system.
  • Secured access into the unit.
  • Facilities for parents to spend the night at the bedside of their sick child-accommodations available in both General Pediatrics and Pediatric Intensive Care.
  • Nourishment station stocked with items geared towards the pediatric patient such as popsicles, juice, pastas, soup, peanut butter, etc.
  • Special treatment areas for children who must undergo painful procedures such as blood drawing/IV insertion. This allows for the child's bed to be a "safe zone" and decreases the anxiety of the child.
  • Each bedside equipped with flat screen television and PlayStation 2 including the beds in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.
  • Online access for laptop computers at each bedside.
  • Centralized computer for e-mail access for the pediatric patient
  • Quiet room for parents
  • Decorated in a whimsical park like theme with "bubbling water" for relaxation and stress relief.

"Our state-of-the-art unit is a wonderful addition to the hospital and such a boon to the community," said Janet L. Barnum, RN, assistant director of Pediatrics and Pediatric Intensive Care. "I compliment the hospital's administration for its unwavering support of the entire project."
