Support Services refers to the area of the clinical laboratory where specimens are obtained, processed and prepared for testing. Phlebotomists, health care workers who draw blood, are usually the only laboratory personnel with direct patient contact. They are the informal representatives of the clinical laboratory. This area of the clinical laboratory also arranges for testing at clinical laboratories that specialize in certain esoteric analyses.
