Same Day Surgery: A 3-Step Guide
Step One: Pre-admission Testing
Your surgery may require a preliminary blood test or EKG, depending upon your age, medical history and type of anesthesia. Once your surgery is scheduled, you will be contacted by a nurse, who will ask you about your medical history, and make all the necessary arrangements for your pre-admission testing.
Please check with your insurance company to see if you need a referral to have your pre-admission testing done at the Hinsdale Surgical Center.
If we have not called you... please call us at (630) 325-5035.
Confirming Your Schedule
A nurse will contact you the day before your surgery to confirm your arrival time, time of surgery, and to answer any last minute questions you may have. Feel free to call us at your convenience the day before surgery to confirm these arrangements. Call (630) 325-5035 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Step Two: Preparing For The Day Of Surgery
For your personal safety and comfort, we ask that you follow these guidelines...
- DO NOT eat or drink anything, not even water, after midnight the night before your surgery. If you have had anything to eat or drink, your surgery will have to be canceled. (This does not apply if you are receiving only local anesthesia.)
- DO NOT wear jewelry or bring valuables with you. We have no place for safe-keeping of these items.
- DO NOT wear make-up, false eyelashes, or fingernail or toenail polish.
- DO NOT discontinue any medications unless directed by your referring doctor, your surgeon or the Surgical Center.
- DO notify your surgeon of medications you are taking, especially aspirin products, blood thinner medications or diet pills.
- DO notify your surgeon if you are a diabetic.
- DO notify your referring doctor and your surgeon if you experience any health changes between your last visit and the day of surgery -such as a cold, fever, the flu or other symptoms.
- DO wear casual, comfortable, loose fitting clothing.
- DO feel free to bring a favorite toy if the patient is a child.
- DO arrange for someone responsible to drive you home and stay with you upon discharge. You may feel a little weak or sleepy; this is normal. Printed post-operative instructions will be given to you when you leave. No patient will be discharged after anesthesia without a responsible adult present.
Step Three: The Day Of Surgery
Upon your arrival at the Hinsdale Surgical Center, you will be greeted by our receptionist and the financial arrangements you have made will be completed. You will then meet with your nurse to sign consent forms and change into a surgical gown. You will also meet with your anesthesiologist if anesthesia is required.
A parent or legal guardian must accompany a patient under 18 years of age.
The Procedure
To ensure your comfort, our staff will provide you with personalized attention before, during and after the procedure. When your surgery is completed, you will be moved to a recovery area where you will receive further care. A family member or friend may stay with you during that time.
Your Recovery
Before you leave, your nurse will provide you with instructions for the next few days. Soon, you'll be resting at home, where familiar surroundings can promote quicker recovery.
Follow-Up at Home
You will receive a personalized phone call from a nurse at the Hinsdale Surgical Center to check on your progress and answer any questions you may have. The Hinsdale Surgical Center observes the American Hospital Association "Bill of Rights" of the patient. These rights are posted in our waiting area and an individual copy will provided to you upon request.
