Donating Blood: History of the ALPS Blood Center
In the early 1970s, the ALPS Blood Center began a small donor center, offering only whole blood products. But, with guidance and support of Dr. Roland Lonser, the hospital expanded its center and its services.
In 1976, an autologous blood program was developed. Autologous donors donate their own blood for an upcoming elective surgery. A cell saver was introduced in 1979, allowing blood to be collected, rinsed, and returned to patients during surgery. Shortly after, an apheresis program was added to the blood center, allowing patients and community members to not only donate platelets, but also receive therapeutic appointments. Then, in 1985, the blood component collection center began a bone marrow transplant program. This growth and accomplishment over such a short period was due solely to the motivation and determination of the medical staff of Adventist Lab Partners.
Today, the ALPS Blood Center continues to grow. In 2002, ALPSBC collected over 1,000 pints of blood and blood products and again in 2003. Although this is an enormous increase over the past years, Adventist Hinsdale Hospital alone transfuses roughly 5,000 pints a year. It is our goal to supply 100% of all the Adventist Midwest Healths Midwest Region's blood and blood products. We cannot do it alone, so please call 630-856-7070 an donate today!
