Bariatric Surgery: Lifestyle Changes

Successful surgery requires that patients have a commitment to lifelong weight loss. This commitment means adhering to the following:

  • Frequent follow ups with physicians and other personnel
  • 1200 - 1500 kcal low fat, sugar diet
  • 5 - 6 small meals per day
  • Eating slowly, in small amounts, and with small amounts of non-sugared beverages
  • Avoiding foods with more than 5 gms sugar per serving
  • Daily exercise
  • Daily vitamin and mineral supplements
  • Stopping eating when satisfied or slightly full

Gastric Bypass surgery is a start. It is important to understand that commitment to lifestyle changes is necessary in order to achieve the goal of long term weight loss success.
