Bariatric Surgery: An Introduction

Obesity is becoming the number one health epidemic in the United States and while many weight loss treatments exist, diet and exercise are effective for only 1 in 20 people. As a result, the demand for Bariatric surgery is increasing. In addition to weight loss, improved outcomes include the resolution and/or improvement of medical, psychological, social and economic problems associated with obesity called co-morbidities.

The National Institutes of Health, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services agency responsible for medical and behavioral research on overweight and obesity recommends Bariatric surgery as an option that has had long-term success for patients with clinically severe obesity. http://www.nih.gov
